Generation Gap: Buttons

Well, if you were born after 2000, it may be.  Recently one of my students in a beginning design course turned in a collection that puzzled me.  The garments she designed didn't seem to show her assignment: design a line influenced by a decade from the 20th century. When I asked her how her decade had influenced the designs, she responded: "Buttons, the decade used buttons, so that is my influence".  I had to pause and think about that because usually these projects reflect the silhouette and style lines from the decade, and not a trim.  <br /><br />Then it hit me: a girl born after 1990 has grown up in the era of "American Apparel" Ts and "Forever 21" easy knit tops.  Is it possible that today's college student hasn't owned a garment with buttons?  Are buttons really a vintage trim? Here we have a few fashion illustrations from the early 1960's when Jackie O was wearing large scale buttons that popped down her suit jackets. There's something in that nifty brass setting that really gives her luxurious jackets and coats a bit of down to earth practicality. Halter Tops for Summer

You still have time to make up some cute summer tops, and THEN you can cruise the town!<br /><br />What's more classic than a halter top when the weather is hot, and this one is so cute.  It's made from a single piece for each bra top, and a midriff panel that is shaped in front to create a slender look.<br /><br />This style works best if it's lined with something crisp and cool, like cotton broadcloth.  That also makes the edges neater than trying to turn and stitch all the way around every edge.  The pattern here gives some idea how the bra top is cut: with an open dart at the bottom that has been converted into gathers under the bustline (pattern piece G).<br /><br /><a href="http://s249.photobucket.com/albums/gg217/pintucks/?action=view&current=P6260141-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" src="http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg217/pintucks/P6260141-1.jpg"></a><br /><br />This pattern is part of a great group of summer styles: tops and pants with that 70's style. It has that classic 70's bodice, derived from ethnic tunics, tied back at the empire waistline to create a terrific fit.<br /><br />Imagine our suprise, when we found the pattern it was made from (well, not exactly the original pattern, but one of the same).  We had found its mate: McCall's pattern #5490.<br /><br /><a href="http://s249.photobucket.com/albums/gg217/pintucks/?action=view&current=P6260124-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" src="http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg217/pintucks/P6260124-1.jpg"></a><br /><br />This view is clearly shown on the pattern envelope, and gosh, it really looks like the drawing (why doesn't that happen more often?).<br />There is the nice "V" neckline, with open collar, and tunic style sleeves.<br /><br /><a href="http://s249.photobucket.com/albums/gg217/pintucks/?action=view&current=P6260122-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" src="http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg217/pintucks/P6260122-1.jpg"></a><br /><br />So now we know more about this dress than we did when we found it. But the question arises: Do we keep them together, or sell them each apart? Even though "Bonnie and Clyde" would have been a few years earlier, the 1920's and 30's were a big influence in what was being worn during the early 1970's. One big fashion inspiration was "The Great Gatsby" with it's gorgeous dresses and suits.</div><div><br /></div><div>From those movies came vintage looks that included menswear inspired suits. </div><div>Like this one: Look at the jacket details--it has fun little pockets, wide lapels and puffy shoulders, neat belt in back (hello, Marc Jacobs!), but the pants are what's really cool--they have a hi-waist with a really wide waistband and little buttons instead of a zipper. Then there are the gangster (as in 1930's style gangster) pant legs with wide cuffs. The girl in the pink is even wearing a beret like Bonnie wore in "Bonnie and Clyde". I am betting she made that suit from a fine wale pink corduroy. The short sleeves would have been truely a fashion statement in 1973 for the girl who wanted to be noticed with her vintagey (then) 1920's style pant suit.</div><div><br /></div><div>The next time you consider trying on a high waist pair of pants, remember the 1970's as it portrayed the 1920's and 30's.
